For years, the former site of the Pilgrim’s Pride poultry processing plant in Athens, Alabama sat idle due to closure and neglect and had become an eyesore for the city. Garnering input from citizens and stakeholders was vital in guiding the programmatic elements for the site. Located in a floodplain, this redevelopment plan proposes revitalizing the blighted brownfield area and restoring the ecological function of the stream as an essential stormwater feature. A mix of small-scale retail, public infrastructure investments that focus on strengthening connectivity to the downtown area and neighborhood schools is also recommended. The final outcomes of the design workshop efforts are outlined in an elaborate plan, which will guide the redevelopment of the site.
