To continue its environmental mission, the City of Ducktown asked the Farmer | Morgan team to assess stormwater infrastructure of the town and seek ways to address the flooding and water quality issues impacting the local watershed. The Spruce Street Green Development Project began with examining site constraints, such as topographic conditions, soil percolation, rainfall frequency and intensity, runoff rates, and volume calculations to determine the appropriate green design solutions to address the severe flooding impacting urban and residential areas. Impervious surface percentages were calculated to determine points for intervention within the town’s drainage area. Due to steep slopes and minimal absorption opportunities, especially in low areas, a permeable paver system would be installed along roadways and intersections to capture runoff before it reaches residential areas. This filtration system will not only absorb excess flooding and runoff but will also cleanse the water before it reaches local water bodies and streams.
